How to: Configure a communications (COM) port.
Solution:
Use the 'Device Manager' tab in the 'System' settings in the 'Control Panel'.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select the 'Settings' menu and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)

3) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)

4) Click the 'Device Manager' tab.
5) Double-click the 'Ports (COM & LPT)' icon. (The branch expands to show the types of ports available on the computer.)

6) Select the communications port to configure.
7) Click 'Properties'. (The '<port> Properties' dialog box appears, where <port> is the name of the selected port.)
8) Click the 'Resources' tab.
9) Clear the 'Use automatic settings' check box. (This allows you to select a different configuration.)

10) Select the desired configuration from the 'Settings based on' drop-down list box.
11) Click 'OK' to close the '<port> Properties' dialog box. (The 'System Settings Change' dialog box appears.)
12) Click 'Yes' to restart the computer.
